My sweet Ella. She has been sick for half of her life. I feel so bad for her! But she's a trooper and smiles and coos and remains happy even though she can hardly get air through her nose. I have had her checked at the pediatrician 3 times for this cold. Each time they tell me it's not in her chest. Sunday on our way home from church she started coughing. It sounded nasty and wet. I called the doctor and he called in Xopenex (hey, we have some of that in our drug closet!) for Ella via nebulizer. Now I have 2 kids on a nebulizer... Guilt... I passed on my respiratory issues... More guilt...
Sunday night Ella slept 7 straight hours and I slept ZERO. I was glued to the monitor all night worried about her breathing. She was coughing and making all sorts of strange and alarming sounds. 8 a.m. couldn't come fast enough. I called the pediatrician and they had me bring her right over. Here she is waiting for her name to be called.
Thankfully I got all good news. This doctor said that yes, she has Bronchiolitis caused by the RSV virus. She said it's very common and I had a November baby and have a toddler - double whammy. She also said that it's very rare for a child to end up in the hospital almost 5 weeks into the illness. She said kids usually worsen to the point of needing emergent care in the first 72 hours. And she told me it was most likely due to breast feeding that Ella was beating this on her own! Yay! Because I was sitting here thinking I might as well not be a prisoner to the boob if my newborn has been sick her whole life. She told me the cough is GOOD (wow, I was shocked) and showed me some techniques to get the mucous up (involves beating on her back and chest...). She feels Ella is over the hump and on her way to recovery. I don't even have to continue the nebulizer! All good news!
Today I noticed Ella seemed better already. She was awake and alert most of the day and I hardly heard her cough. Praise God.
